A Dangerous Way of Travelling: Hitch-Hiking

There are several ways of going places, many different means of transportation and innumerable travel agencies and organizations that can tailor the perfect trip for you.

But some people are different: they do not like to respect time-tables; they prefer to have the chance to change their minds about the destination they want to reach anytime. They do not fancy sitting in a bus or in a train like anyone else. "It's too boring for them". They want to be "out there" and "do something", not just looking out of the window.

They want to meet the "real" people, people from all walks of life. They do not want to stick with other tourists, they want to meet the "locals".

They would rather feel free and do what they want, or "think" that they are free.

These people are hitch-hikers. I am not at all trying to classify them because you cannot group them: everybody nordic walking pole manufacturers, but certainly they have something in common. They are attracted by the adventure, by the unknown.

I am not talking here about people who ask for a ride because they are broke and they cannot afford anything else.

Hitch-hiking can actually be very perilous. This is not a sermon. This is a fact of life. Most people who hitchhike are young travelers who are wandering in some foreign countries and think that everybody is nice and helpful.

I am sorry, but it is not always like that. It is true, most people are good but unfortunately some others have got some serious issues.

I personally hitch-hiked by myself in New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Norway. Every day was an adventure! I never knew who I was going to meet and where I was going to end up. It was a holiday! I met heaps of different types of folks and I learned a lot from them: about their countries, their cultures and their beliefs.
